The weather, which is perfect 90% of the year, makes you want to spend your time outdoors and the number of activities made possible by the close proximity to the ocean and rivers are seemingly endless. Surfing, sailing, kiteboarding, fishing, swimming, dock-jumping, boating, weekend sandbar parties, water skiing, kayaking and paddle-boarding are just a few of the water-related activities found in the coastal Lowcountry. I grew up in Bluffton, the heart of the Lowcountry. The dazzling beauty of the coast grabbed me and never let go. Growing up in this area provided the opportunity to explore some of the small towns that line this part of the coastal South Carolina Lowcountry including Hilton Head Island, Charleston, Beaufort, Bluffton, Ridgeland, and even Savannah Ga. We have festivals to celebrate nearly everything: the endangered Gopher Tortoise, watermelons, catfish, rice, harbors and water, shrimp, chili, wine and so much more. Lowcountry dining can be an art practiced by gourmet chefs, or a quick bite from a local food truck on an old back porch. Overlook the water, the salt marshes, or one of the dozens of world renowned championship golf courses while samplings some of the finest cuisines on the east coast. There is always something to do. Sure, I hear the pizza and bagels are good in the north but I certainly love the soul food, fresh seafood, and barbecue offered around here.
I truly believe the ocean, the great weather, and the flavors of southern cuisine have instilled a permanent sense of happiness and belonging in my soul. It’s true, growing up in the rich landscape of the Lowcountry and living full-time in Bluffton does give you a certain appreciation for the smell of pluff mud, for always having a tidal chart handy, and for the way that Spanish moss catches the light in the early morning. It has been proven more than once that exposure to the sun plays a big role in a person’s happiness. That certainly might be a factor as to why Bluffton and Hilton Head Island is consistently ranked in the top destinations to retire, to live, and to vacation. This is my HOME and I would not trade it for the world.
